Home Repair and Weatherization Help
In June, ten volunteers attended presentations by local agencies to learn how to counsel others about getting benefits for weatherization and home repair problems. The project is a result of the web based Home Repair Guide from Franklin County Home Care at www.fchcc.org, that provides information on the basics of finding home repair and weatherization options as well as funds to pay for these modifications.
Sections of the guide, especially information on finding the money for weatherization and repair projects, can be very complicated for many. In order to assist those who cannot navigate the process involved in accessing funds, FCHCC is offering free training to community members who are willing to help others with the knowledge they receive. No experience is necessary.
The first training sessions included experts from Community Action Fuel Assistance, the Franklin Regional Housing and Rehabilitation Agency, the Center for Ecological Technology (MassSave), the US Dept of Agriculture Rural Development Agency and the Pioneer Valley Planning Council. The next session will be in August and will feature the Community Action Weatherization Program.
Volunteers can assist people in their own community make their homes safer and more energy efficient. The current volunteers represent the towns of Athol, Bernardston, Colrain, Greenfield, Northfield, Leverett, Shelburne, Buckland, Ashfield, Gill, Orange and Montague. Many are available to assist in nearby towns.
